Sony Pocket Reader Giveaway

Sony Pocket Reader I remember in grade school at a recess-time ballgame sitting out in right field reading a book. My dad, who was both my elementary school teacher and the pitcher for the game, allowed it without comment, demonstrating at that moment a supreme understanding of my priorities in life.

As a child, I always had a book with me. I read more frequently than I ate. The literature that surrounded me then is with me still today.

That’s why I was thrilled when Sony contacted me a couple weeks ago asking me to participate in their Words Move Me campaign. They are sending me two Sony Readers, one for me to try out and one to give away. Yup, that means one of you is going to win a Sony Pocket Reader!

The Sony Reader can hold up to 350 books!! I can only imagine how thrilled the little-girl me would have been with such gadget. E-books for the reader can be purchased at the Sony eBook Library. BUT the frugalista in me loves the fact that half a million books (mostly older ones) are ALSO available for free in the public domain! Some libraries also check out e-books these days.  The reader is compatible with non-DRM books in TXT, RTF, PDF, ePUB and Word format. (Word files require conversion through the desktop software.) Sources include: Project Gutenberg · Google Books · Wikisource · Feedbooks · Bookglutton.

The gizmo you see below features book-quotes that are meaningful to me. Click to the left or the right of the center box to scroll through the quotes that I’ve chosen. (It was crazy-hard to narrow down my books and pick quotes!) You can also click over to  Words Move Me and see words that other people love. I found some interesting quotes that way, and rediscovered some books I loved.  One warning though: not all the quotes there are family-friendly.

    I had to
say over and over, “God, I confess my unforgiveness toward
my husband. Deliver me from all of it.”

From the Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian. Got me through a really bad spot in our marriage, and taught me that I needed to forgive myself as well.

“Sighed Mayzie, a lazy bird, hatching an egg, “I’m tired and bored and I’ve kinks in my legs from sitting, just sitting here, day after day. It’s work! How I hate it – I’d much rather play!”

Horton Hatches An Egg, read to me by my mother and now I get to read it to my girls. Maybe not moving, but certainly special!

  4. Gypsie on December 7, 2009 at 8:50 am

How about a quote from an author? JRR Tolkien said, “Not all who wander are lost”. I love to travel, hence the name Gypsie. My mom and I both have the wandering spirit which we try to indulge in a girls trip once a year to somewhere exotic. We have visited together: Most of Europe, Costa Rica, Thailand, China. She wants to go to Vietnam and Cambodia next.

“I look placid, you see, that’s why people think I’m fine. Inside I worry a lot.”
    — Maeve Binchy (Tara Road)

I think many people would relate to this sentiment, but it was resounding with me. People are always assuming that everything is a-okay in my life because I try to move through my days with a sense of calm and control. That doesn’t mean that I’m not constantly worried about the “what if” that may creep in and change things.

“….remember that wherever you are, you are put there by God…” from the August 30 devotion, “My Utmost for His Highest” by Oswal Chambers.

Even after 18 years, I remember this quote. I was serving in the Peace Corps in Guatemala, and it was a cold day during the rainy season. After a hard day in the field, I was miserable and wanted to go home. For some reason, I picked up this devotional and opened it up to this day (it wasn’t Aug. 30). After reading this quote, it struck me that God had put me there to serve and I shouldn’t quit and go home – I was put there to be of service to the villagers. It really struck me, and I still read this devotional!

“But you see, Meg, just because we don’t understand doesn’t mean that the explanation doesn’t exist.”
    - Madeleine L’Engle, A Wrinkle in Time

I’ve always thought this was a good perspective to keep in many situations.

I can’t tell you how anxious I am to post this but I hope you’ll understand I’m very serious in this. My quote is one that was a lightening bolt moment, one I *needed* to read more than anything and, if I’m honest, one I’m still struggling with. I’m mom to four kids and none are considered ‘normal’ and a couple were/are very needy/hands on. My oldest is 22 now and lives four houses up in a house we bought because even though he’s an adult, he’s not ready to be on his own yet. He’s still very needy only he sees it now and tries so hard to fight it and be his own person. When he was a kid I slept 2 hours a night because he was so … hands on? I’m not trying to build up to the quote but explain why this one hit me so hard. I’ve worn myself out trying to get my ‘me time’ in over the years and it seemed the harder I tried, the worse it got. In your book, “A Sane Woman’s Guide to Raising a Large Family” you said this.

“When you’re trying to escape your kids so you can catch a breath, they seem to sense it and get even more needy.”

I have that bookmarked and within hands reach on my desk at all times as, as much as it made PERFECT sense, I tend to forget it after awhile and seeing the pink cover of your book instantly brings it back to me.

“It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.” This is a quote by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Her books meant a lot to me growing up and I have enjoyed introducing them to my own daughter. I still enjoy remembering the stories of Laura and Mary and the rest of the family and the hardships they endured, always showing the love that was between each family member as well. In this day of instant everything, it’s nice to slow down sometimes and realize that the simple things are the best things.

For God so loved the World that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
This is the quote that change my life as a young child. It is the kind of quote that has the Power behind it to change lives.

  12. fern on December 7, 2009 at 9:21 am

“and she loved a little boy.”

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

This is the first quote that came to my mind–why?, I guess because in the end really all that matters is love. It is not who you love, but how you love. And there is nothing like love in its purest form–unconditional. “Once there was a tree…and she loved a little boy.”

  13. Melissa F on December 7, 2009 at 9:23 am

“These children are dear to Me. Be a mother to them, and more than a mother. Watch over them tenderly, be just and kind. If thy heart is not large enough to embrace them, I will enlarge it after a pattern of My own. If these young children are docile and obedient, bless Me for it; if they are froward, call upon Me for help; if they weary thee, I will be thy consolation; if thou sink under thy burden, I will be thy Reward.”

Amy Carmichael quoted in her biography A Chance to Die by Elisabeth Elliot

Oh, if only I had a thousand entries. I have lots of book quotes that I love. One of my very favorites is this, by G.K. Chesterton:
“An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered.”

I’ve thought of this quote numerous times in the process of raising five (still young!) children.

“I want God’s Word to be written on my heart so that my life reflects that I’m a woman who knows God and walks closely with him. It is not my goal in life to look back and count my accomplishments…I know I will have lived well if I can say that God has been my absolute delight and my companion throughout my days and that His Word has been a steady flow of water for my thirsty soul.” Janet Pope, His Word in my Heart

A great book that has encouraged me to keep plugging away at “hiding His words” in my heart.

  16. Maggie on December 7, 2009 at 10:11 am

    “”I love my mommy!”said Bill”

this is from the book Owl Babies by Martin Waddell.

The littlest owl, Bill, spends most of the book saying “I want my mommy” and when she comes home it is just so sweet.

I just love this because it reminds me so much of my little sisters.

“I do not like green eggs and ham I do not like them Sam I am.”
    — Dr. Seuss (Green Eggs and Ham)

I love this quote, not only because I teach school, but because we all are afriad to try new things keeping ourselves from enjoying the things in life that could give us great joy!

  19. Joanne on December 7, 2009 at 10:43 am

“Thou hast outraged, not insulted me, sir; but for that I ask thee not to beware of Starbuck; thou wouldst but laugh; but let Ahab beware of Ahab; beware of thyself, old man.”

This quote doesn’t have any significance as to changing my life, or anything like that, but it really amazes many people at times – including myself – because it’s one of my husband’s favorite quotes. As a child and teen he rarely. ever. read. In fact, he has often mentioned that he can remember reading one book during all of those years.

Since that time though he has become one who reads (possibly) more than any other member of the family! The first book he read as an adult is still one of his favorites …. Moby Dick. What amazes many people is not only the fact that he made it all the way through Moby Dick, but that he chose that book to start with; and has read it through several more times since then!
I also enjoy hearing him recite that quote, his rendition is pretty neat! At least, in my opinion…

And yes, he is constantly urging me to read more, but not just simple novels :-(

  20. Erin on December 7, 2009 at 10:45 am

Peter: Forget them, Wendy. Forget them all. Come with me where you’ll never, never have to worry about grown up things again.

Wendy: Never is an awfully long time.

I remember reading this as a small girl and being completely torn by the concept. We all have to grow up, but it’s so hard to let go of the joys and ease of childhood. I was comforted (and still am) by the idea that just like Wendy, we can always think of Peter and his infinite childhood when we find ourselves longing fot it.

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Elenor Roosevelt

It’s too easy to let others get you down, whether they verbally abuse you, or you do it to yourself by comparing yourself to them. I often say this to myself during homeschool meetings when I am most likely to question the way I am raising/teaching my children.

    • Amber Emory on December 7, 2009 at 10:53 am

Aw, rats! You said “from a book”!

“Isn’t it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive-it’s such an interesting world.” Anne Shirley, Anne of Green Gables

I recently read Anne of Green Gables for the first time. I love Anne’s view of the world. With all the craziness going on in today’s world, I still think there are interesting things to find out about. :-)

“Don’t underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering.”

Winnie the Pooh, via A. A. Milne

I didn’t pick this as an ode to laziness. When I was overexhausted with raising my children, my mentor said to me, “Be still. Your children need you to be present. Just sit and be there. Watch them play. Be on hand for every.single.training.moment. There will be time enough to DO later.”

And it has changed my life and my mothering. But, like most things, Pooh said it first, and better than I ever could.

  25. Rebecca on December 7, 2009 at 11:24 am

“The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another’s desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together.”~ Erma Bombeck

Can I do one from an author? I love this quote. It reminds me so much of my childhood with my brothers and sister and it helps me remeber what is I am wanting for my own children.

Now unto Him that is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us. Because we so often put limits on God when everything about Him is limitless. We try to handle things on our own, not always remembering we don’t have to. He’s able to do so much more than we can imagine!

“As for the fear of slack-jawed Wal-Mart greeters spotting your crew and counting out loud-are you really going to give them power over your family size?”

I’m sure you recognize that one and I’m not sucking up by posting this, since I know winners are selected at random. I do, however, see this as a perfect opportunity to thank you for those words. I recently had our 5ht child. I tend to be shy in public and I don’t like to draw attention to myself. This doesn’t work well when I take all of the kids with me anywhere-especially Wal-Mart. And your words have become my new mantra any time we all go somewhere together. I never imagined myself as a mom of more than 2-3 when I was growing up, and yet here I am. And I love it.

I think of these words from Micah in the Bible whenever I get “snarky” or feel justified in judging others: “This is what the Lord does require of thee, o man. To love mercy, do justly and walk humbly with thy Lord” Seems to put my character issues in focus.

“Thou and I are too wise to woo peaceably.” from Much Ado About Nothing which technically is a play but can be read in book form.

I was in a relationship where the man and I just existed together–we loved each other but our relationship didn’t challenge us to be the best we could be. We never argued because there was nothing to argue about. I knew there was something wrong about this. We broke up and I met someone else. The new relationship is the complete opposite–there are arguments but mostly there are discussions and every day, I feel like we are making each other better people by talking about issues that affect us both in the relationship and in the world.

  33. Melissa on December 7, 2009 at 12:27 pm

Hope it doesn’t have to be an exact quote because I recently loaned my copy to a friend. It comes from Revolutionary Parenting by George Barna and is something to the effect of how easy it is to compare our children to other children and think we’re doing a good job when what we should be doing is comparing our children to the standard of what God wants for them. I don’t know how many times that thought has come back to me in the 3 years since I first read it.

Oh…my husband and I would have to wrestle over this. What a cool prize!

I love anything to do with Anne of Green Gables. But this line just describes what every girl dreams. We all just want a friend that is REAL and true to us. Anne Shirley understood!

“A bosom friend–an intimate friend, you know–a really kindred spirit to whom I can confide my inmost soul. I’ve dreamed of meeting her all my life. I never really supposed I would, but so many of my loveliest dreams have come true all at once that perhaps this one will, too. Do you think it’s possible?”

I love her. And yes….I’m blessed to have several bosom friends, thanks to my Lord!

” God is the color of water. Water doesn’t have a color.”

Ooh, this would be neat. My favorite quote is from Elizabeth Prentiss’ book Stepping Heavenward: “Here is another sweet, fragrant mouth to kiss; here are two more feet to make music with their pattering about my nursery. Here is a soul to train for God, and the body in which it dwells is worth all it will cost, since it is the abode of a kingly tenant. I may see less of friends, but I have gained one dearer than them all, to whom, while I minister in Christ’s name, I make a willing sacrifice of what little leisure for my own recreation my other darlings had left me. Yes, my precious baby, you are welcome to your mother’s heart, welcome to her time, her strength, her health, her tenderest cares, to her life-long prayers! Oh, how rich I am, how truly, how wondrously blest!”

So, carefully! carefully! with the plates!”

That’s an excerpt from a poem in _The Hobbit_ by Tolkien. My husband read this book to my older girls recently, and now my two-year-old boy wanders around the house, muttering his own version of this funny song that tickles us all.

  48. Meredith on December 7, 2009 at 1:46 pm

“It is a truth univerasally acknowleged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains” – Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

I am an Austen lover – I read everything she wrote at least once a year and usually all in a row. I have tried explaining to many people how funny and arch she is even though they picture boring novels they were forced to read in high school. Someone gave me the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies book and I wasn’t that interested, until I read the first line. The morphing of Jane Auten’s most famous opening into this made me laugh so hard that my husband came racing into the room to make sure I was okay and I immediately had to call my sister to give her the same reaction.
But beyond the humor, it really did remind me that change can be good and even the best plans, recipes, lives can be made even better if you don’t allow them to become too set in stone.
    And, MOOORE BRAAAAAINs.

    Psalm 121
I lift up my eyes to the hills-
where does my help come from?

My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

he will not let your foot slip-
    he who watches over you will not slumber;

Indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

    The LORD watches over you-
    the LORD is your shade at your right hand;

the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The LORD will keep you from all harm-
he will watch over your life:

the LORD will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.

Just one of the most comforting quotes I know.
