*WIN $100 Visa Gift Card from Tom’s Toothpaste*

This is a compensated review by BlogHer and Tom’s of Maine.

Recently I was asked by Tom’s of Maine if I’d be game to let my kids try their toothpaste on video.  I thought it sounded like fun.  Here’s a video of my youngest 2 girls trying out Tom’s Silly Strawberry toothpaste.   I remember trying a natural toothpaste years ago and not being especially in love with the flavor.  But this toothpaste tastes good!  It is also, in my girls’ words, ‘not so spicy’ as traditional toothpaste, which makes it more comfortable for little ones to use.

I told them if they get a cavity then they have to pay for it… with their own money.

    * So far it has worked :)

Luckily for me, my kids are obsessed with toothbrushes. Early on, their dentist suggested electric toothbrushes to make it easier. We’ve used them every since. They actually LIKE brushing their teeth!

Also? We use that very toothpaste! Good stuff!

My youngest son (age 10) has cerebral palsy-spastic quad and it’s not easy getting into to his mouth to brush his teeth. He’ll just look at me with his smile. Most times I’m singing silly songs to get him to open his mouth so I can get in brush his teeth. After his last dentist appointment which is always a challenge I went out and bought an battery operated toothbrush. Now all I ahve to do is say I’m going to go in and tickle his mouth, teeth and gums and he starts giggling and loves every bit of it. No longer do I have to struggle with him to open his mouth; thus toothbrushing is so much more fun. We have a good laugh and his teeth are getting cleaner than I was able to get with a regular toothbrush. Yipee!!

I think the big thing is having it be part of their routine. They usually want to stall toothbrushing at night because they know bed-time is near, so we play games like going to the dentist, searching for dinosaurs in their teeth or having a puppet on our hand do the inspection after they’ve brushed.

What do we do if we don’t yet have little ones? I have one on the way (due in February) but it will be awhile until I need to get him to brush his teeth! Though strawberry flavored toothpaste seems like a good way to start…

  8. Alaina @ Three Ladies and a Dad on December 22, 2009 at 7:23 am

I just tell them to go brush…they always have been good brushers.

  9. Sarah on December 22, 2009 at 7:51 am

My kids have a toothbrush with a timer, so they brush until the timer goes off.
Aside from that, we give the kids $10 every time we go to the dentist and they remain cavity free. A little incentive, because we would have to pay more than $10 to get a cavity filled.

This is a little on the horrible side, but I’ve told my son that if he does not brush his teeth “the bugs” will get into his mouth (bugs meaning plaque, but bugs seems to have a better impact). Since there has been some commercials on TV showing the plaque bugs crawling around in some persons mouth, that has reinforced things. Whatever anyone may think, my son has excellent teeth brushing routine and beautiful teeth.

When my girls were little we brushed our teeth together. Guess it was more fun to do with someone than on your own.

  12. Tracy on December 22, 2009 at 8:07 pm

We just tell them to brush and explain that if they get cavities then the dentist has to give them a shot in their mouth and drill on their tooth. That normally is incentive enough to get them to brush. So far no cavities and they are ages 7 and 6. Praying it stays that way.

Our kids grandpa always tells them -”only brush the ones you want to keep.” We use it now too.

My oldest son has no problem brushing. It was a struggle with my younger son. Now that he loves to do everything that his big brother does – I use that for everything good – including brushing his teeth!

  16. Kim Keena on December 23, 2009 at 1:50 pm

I tell them they only have to brush the ones they want to keep! :)

I have quadruplet toddler boys who are just now “cutting their teeth” on tooth brushing. We simply called the toothpaste a “treat” and that was all it has taken. They remind me to do it now. Don’t know how long that will last, but so far so good!

  18. Kim on December 23, 2009 at 11:25 pm

My younger kids LOVE to brush their teeth. My two year old will find a toothbrush and stuff it in his mouth, whether or not it is his. But my older kids aren’t as toothbrush crazed. I usually have to give them a fun product to try to get them excited like a flavored flouride rinse, some yummy dental floss or a silly toothbrush.

  19. Shauntae Smith on December 24, 2009 at 10:21 am

How do I GET them to brush their teeth? How about telling me how to get them to STOP brushing them? lol! My kids use Tom’s fluoride-free Strawberry toothpaste and it tastes so great my 2 and 4 year olds would brush their teeth 20 times a day if I let them! :)

As a side note, Tom’s has great products. My husband and I use the fluoride-free mint toothpaste and the aluminum free deodorants :)

My daughter likes me to pretend I’m sneaking up on the food to brush it out!

  21. Grateful for Grace on December 24, 2009 at 12:57 pm

We actually use Tom’s for the kids. They love the strawberry flavor.

The older kids brush on their own, the youngers get to try. ;-)

  22. janee on December 25, 2009 at 1:30 pm

We let our daughter pick out her own toothbrush (she currently uses one that sings veggie tales songs) and make brushing teeth a part of her regular routine, and she loves routines!

  23. Lauren on December 25, 2009 at 6:01 pm

We found that our kids LOVE new toothbrushes, so I always keep an assortment in the drawer of their bathroom. They don’t got to actually open a new one though until Mom has deemed their old one worn out. We give it a pretty liberal interpretation, to keep things moving, and seeing them in the drawer seems to help – they want to hurry up and get the one they want before a sibling gets it!

  24. em-jay on December 25, 2009 at 7:28 pm

We all love to brush at our house! We try to make sure that we help in order to keep all the teeth clean, and sometimes we sing the ABCs while we brush for extra fun. joyful[dot]too[at]gmail[dot]com

  29. Annette D on December 26, 2009 at 8:10 pm

When my sons were young (they are now 16 and 21), I tried all kinds of different toothpastes and found that Tom’s Strawberry flavored was their favorite. I never had any trouble getting them to brush because they liked the flavor.

  30. Lori on December 26, 2009 at 9:17 pm

My baby is not old enough yet to brush teeth, but I love reading all your comments to give me ideas when she is.

  31. Heather on December 27, 2009 at 12:46 pm

When they were little, I would sing to them while I brushed their teeth. They liked that time together and I never had a problem. Now that they’re older, they brush their own teeth but I will sometimes wonder in and sing a little for them. It always gets a smile (or an eye roll).

  32. Dana on December 27, 2009 at 1:30 pm

It’s part of the older kids bedtime routine. They sing a song in their head to make sure they brush long enough. For my toddler, we take turns… first it’s mommy’s turn, then his turn to brush his teeth. Knowing that he will have a turn, helps him to be patient while I brush them for him first.

  33. Amber C on December 27, 2009 at 6:13 pm

My son likes using the Toothtunes toothbrush that sings to him. The song lasts as long as the brushing should so it makes it easy for him to keep track of how long he should be brushing.

I think one of the easiest ways to get kids interested in brushing is to buy them a cool toothbrush. It might be their favorite color, a fun color or a cool tv character. When it looks fun, it MUST be fun!

So I dont have kids in the traditional sense, but my four legged kids need to brush their teeth too. My labs are really good at having their teeth brushed. I use a tiny amound of human toothpaste (they like it and it smells better than the flavored dog toothpaste) and I use an Oral B disposable human electric toothbrush ($3). Its usually one that my DH and I are done with. The pups love the vibration! Every visit to the vet, we get complements on their teeth!

My little one is a Disney Princess fan so I tell her the Princesses use the same paste…voila!

  39. Vicki on December 28, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Our grandchildren come for overnights, and we keep special fun kid brushes for them, and special toothpaste – we’ll have to try Tom’s this time, I think Papa used up their last toothpaste when he was out! I usually make sure they have brushed when they take their bath, because they love baths, and before we go anywhere, we do a cleanup, toothbrushing, and hair combing. They love to go on excursions, so it is easy to do the grooming if we plan an outing.

  40. Carmen on December 28, 2009 at 6:33 pm

One of my favorite ways to encourage kids to brush their teeth is with music: Get them in the habit of brushing along to a song (about a minute or so long). This way, they brush the appropriate amount of time and it turns this “chore” into something fun! Have a collection of songs to choose from, and let them choose!

My eldest is still too young to brush on his own. But we just started practicing for fluoride toothpaste. I brush and say “don’t swallow, don’t swallow, don’t swallow” over and over and over again and then swoop him to the sink so he can spit. Then he watches me brush and says “don’t swallow, don’t swallow, don’t swallow” right back. Seems to do the trick of making brushing fun and also teaching him not toothpaste isn’t a snack. We’ll see what the dentist says…tomorrow! :)

I know this sounds very stange but last year one of the kiddos had a bad yeast overgrowth problem and the med he was on said one of the side affects from the med could be temporary hair grown on the tounge! Well this topic at the dinner table of all places scared the tar out of the kids and from then on they were pretty regular teeth brushers and tounge brushers:)! They even thought it would be icky to have a hairy tounge. We love Toms of Maine toothpaste! In fact just ordered some silly strawberry flouride free paste.

Best way is to be a good role model. We have tow sinks , so we brush our teeth together.
