September giveaway #1

September 1, 2011

The first giveaway of September is a package of three different books, all with the theme of finding contentedness in life.  Book #1 is Steady Days by Jamie Martin, the author of the website Steady Mom.  This book is a great resource for young moms needing just a little more organization and planning in their days.

Book #2 is a just-released book by Bob Westfall of Walk Through the Bible Ministries and it is called The Fulfillment Principle. It focuses on using your passions to serve God, and talks about the joy to be found living a life surrendered to God.

Book #3 is a memoir by Katrina Kenison called The Gift of An Ordinary Day.  She writes about discovering that the ordinary everyday moments were some of the happiest in her life, and how that realization allowed her to slow down and really savor those moments.

You can click on each picture to go to amazon and read more about these books.  All you have to do to enter to win is to think back over the last couple days and describe a simple moment that turned out to be one of the most enjoyable in the last few days.

One really nice time for me was watching The Cosby Show on Netflix with most of the family last night, and realizing that every time I looked over at my 13yo daughter to see if she was laughing at the funny bits, she was.  And almost every time I looked her way, she looked back at me and grinned. Maybe to most folks that that sounds like it’s not worth mentioning, it’s so ordinary: a mom and daughter, laughing together.    But folks struggling to help older-adopted kids settle in will recognize that occurrence as pure parenting gold-at-the-end-of-the-rainbow.  To be sharing normal moments of laughter with my daughter, with her smiling into my eyes….what a gift.

How about you?  I hope you’ll share a moment with me!  You have until Saturday afternoon to comment, and I’ll announce the winner Saturday evening.  Although many of the giveaways this month will be random drawings, this one is not going to be a random drawing– the winner will be the person who most delights me with his/her story.  I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

To preface, I live 80 miles from the closest Sams Store and shopping in general ranks as one of my least favorite activities. I am walking across the full parking lot making a strategic plan of action to get in and out of the store when I hear my name and turn right into the hug of a friend I had not seen in over 10 years. In fact, she also lives 80 miles from the same store, but in the other direction. We hugged and laughed hugged and spent 5 minutes catching up before giving into her kids and heading in to the store. Maybe I won’t dread going shopping so much from now on.

I was watching the girls at the Barnes and Noble storytime. All the other kids had long gotten bored with a story cause it was a “read aloud” which meant there was no pictures… but my daughter was still paying attention cause being visually impaired she was used to not seeing the pictures(especially in a group setting)…

My most recent “moment” was when my son, who is 5 asked his big sis to play his new dino checkers game with him. We found it at a garage sale this past week and he loves playing it. She had plenty else she could have been doing but she stopped and sat to play 2 games with him. he couldn’t have been happier… and i was thrilled to see them spend that time laughing together. She of course let him win. I got beat the next game.

Strange…..but one of the best memories of the week was sitting in the orthopedics office with my son while they worked on his broken hand. He is such a joy to be with one on one and it doesn’t happen often enough that we get to be together like it was when he was my first. We especially enjoyed trying to find places to get the glow in the dark cast material to glow…in a lit room.
