Make it yourself

August 23, 2011

I don’t know about you, but I get happy when I discover a recipe for something that I can make myself for less money (and/or better quality) than in the grocery store. Here are a few recent ideas that I’ve tried or am planning to try out soon:

How about you?  What’s your favorite ‘make-it-yourself’ idea?

I also love making stuff at home – bread, yoghurt and so on. I’d love to make my own laundry and dishwasher detergent, but we don’t have all the same products over here – so I need to find a South African recipe.

I know a gal who makes so many things from scratch it makes my head spin. even her own fish and soy sauce. BUt the best things ever are home-made peppermint patties and home-made ketchup with freshly deep-fried fries. That’s our 2 major indulgences over Passover, when so many foods are prohibited. Is it spring yet?

Wow, thanks!!! I am not a huge make-it-yourselfer, but even these look worth trying. Thanks again, Mary!

Have you tried the dishwasher soap yet? From everything I’ve read, it seems all the homemade stuff tends to be streaky. I’d love to try this one if you think it really works!

I was wondering where you get those special ingredients for the mozzarella cheese?

Oh, I love Claussen pickles. That’s the only kind I ever buy any more. I’ll have to give that one a try.

I would be interested to know how the dishwasher soap works also.
