Chocolate Butterscotch Chip Cookies

I’ve declared this week to be Baking Week at the Owlhaven, so today my 19 year old daughter and I kicked off the week with a classic.

Erika’s Chocolate-Butterscotch Chip Cookies

Makes 5-6 dozen

  • 5 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1-1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1-1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 4 sticks butter
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 cups chocolate chips
  • 1 cup butterscotch chips

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Soften butter in microwave for 30 seconds or so. In a large bowl mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and white sugar.   Mix well.   In a medium bowl mix softened butter with brown sugar until well combined.  Add butter/brown sugar mixture to the dry mix in the large bowl.  Add water, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and vanilla.  Stir until well combined.  Roll into 1.5 inch balls on an ungreased baking sheet. Flatten slightly.  Bake at 375 degrees for 9-11 minutes, or until edges are slightly brown, but centers of cookies are still soft.

  1. It’s baking week at our house too. :-)

  2. They sound yummy and just what we could do with this week. Could you let me know the weight of the butter used as we don’t get butter in sticks here in New Zealand?

  3. It must be in the air, it’s baking week here as well at the Morristribe. I’m adding these to the list of cookies to make.

I’m hoping to get some exercise this week so that these cookies ‘samplers’ don’t catch up with my hips!

  4. Mmm – it’s baking week here too. My mother-in-law threw down the gauntlet saying that she was only (only!) going to make the six types of cookies that she can’t live without this year unless Elizabeth and I provide some additional motivation.

    Time for a baking frenzy…

  5. This recipe sounds great! I make rice crispy treats with a mixture of the butterscotch and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Heavenly! I’m looking forward to trying your recipe for these cookies because I love the combination of flavors.

    Thanks for sharing!

  6. Christine D. says:

Just made your recipe with dark chocolate and milk chocolate chips, alas no butterscotch in the house at present. The crew declared them a success. I am jazzed about getting 60 cookies out of one batch. We are going to share with the neighbors!

  7. Hi Mary! How much salt? (I see salt listed in the directions, but not on the ingredients list.) Thanks!

  8. HI Mary,
This is totally off topic :-)
Just wanted to say that I live in NZ and I’ve been looking at getting your latest book. I finally ordered one through the Book Depository as they have free shipping world wide (it’s the shipping that makes buying books here expensive!).

A Christmas present to myself……..I can’t wait to receive it!

Hope that you and your family have a great Christmas!

    Cheers, Wilma

  9. Too funny ;) my son the super baker at 11, read the ingredients and he says ” mom if we already HAVE chocolate cookies why are we adding them to a chocolate cookie recipe? ” silly boy doesnt understand us busy moms are ALLOWED to have typos ;) ( I think its a type-o..) anyway we will surely be making these !

  10. Mary, we really enjoyed making these! My almost 12 year old was really skeptical when I doubled the recipe in a bowl that wasn’t quite big enough. There were some suspenseful moments, but we did just fine. They taste fantastic!

  11. Yummy! Thanks for sharing. BTW – I was THRILLED to find your new book at Costco tonight! The hold at my library was a mile long…now I have my very own copy. Merry Christmas to ME and congratulations to you!!! Praying many are blessed and inspired through both of your books and the beautiful life you live. :-)

    Sweet blessings,
    Amy in OR
