Quiet afternoon

October 26, 2009

This morning found us scurrying around early to meet our friend Israel for our yearly family picture. The shoot went well– I’m hoping to have pictures to show you soon. After a morning of picture taking, we weren’t quite in the mood to jump into school at lunch time. John decided to take the bigger kids to the mountains to get the last load of firewood for the season, leaving me home with the little girls.

First on their agenda was a viewing of the movie Tarzan. Then came a few rounds of Phase Ten. (The 4-year old just plays Phase One over and over, since the game is a little on the hard side for her.) Next came crafts–pins and sequins poked into foam balls for Christmas ornaments.

Dinner was this yummy sandwich, served by candlelight. Also on the dinner agenda was the trying on of mom’s dangly earrings. Then after dinner came a long and lively pretend session involving train tracks and lots of chattering. (Overheard at one point: “Meanie is just a mean kid and he can’t control his temperament!”) The evening felt twice as nice due to the presence of a warm fire indoors and a wild wind whipping around outdoors.

Soon the rest of the clan will come thundering in from their wood-gathering trip, and things will be back to their busy normal. But we have greatly enjoyed our quiet afternoon.

I just rec’d my order of Family Feasts yesterday. I had to laugh because while I was reading it, my family was eating tv dinners. (o: In my defense, we’re moving in 1 week and my kitchen is all packed up! Can’t wait to begin the challenge of feeding my family on a budget and to try out some of those recipes!!!

I love those days when you ditch school for something more productive! There is a certain peace that comes from just being together as family and not running around in a hectic frenzy, even if it involves work, like getting firewood. (Glad ours is all in now.) Thanks for sharing your day and the pictures too.
