How much beef?

January 16, 2009

I got a phone call that pleased me this morning. It was the butcher, saying that our beef was wrapped and ready to bring home. Now I am trying to figure out just how much space a whole beef will occupy. The steer weighed 1100 pounds when we delivered it, and I have a 20 cf freezer that I think I can get 3/4 empty. Any chance that will be enough space, or will I need to bring some of the beef over to Grandma’s house?

I have no idea how much space you will need, but I’m excited for you! ;-)

How much freezer space will I need?
Plan on approximately one cubic foot of freezer space for every 15-20 pounds of meat. The interior of a milk crate is slightly more than a cubic foot.

I’m pretty sure you should call Grandma.

We receive 1/4 a beef for Christmas every from my inlaws. We have an upright freezer and it takes about a shelf and a half. Last years beef was close to 1100 pounds. If you do not have enough space, you should be pretty close.

Wow, that sounds delicious! And it looks like April answered your question for ya. My girlfriend’s family still has a ton of beef in their double chest freezer. I think it’s been there for quite a while, I don’t see them use it very often lol. Don’t waste it like they do!

We have a freezer that is mostly empty, if you need space.
