Evidently many of your commenters don’t read Lucky Magazine or watch “What Not to Wear.” The neutrals/basics are black, navy, white, denim, and brown. It’s perfectly acceptable to wear brown with black, navy with brown, etc. But a 10-year-old pair of shoes that was ugly then is still going to be ugly now, so use your fashion sense.

Don’t have any? Get the Lucky guide to fashion. It’s super fun and easy to use, and won’t steer you wrong. I think that black shorts with silver sandals sounds nice, though.

This is all so funny. I think the silver/black sandals were the best choice myself. Just last week I wore a navy blue dress with black shoes to work…a very stylish dress I might add. While having a conversation with a co-worker they looked back and forth, back and forth between my shoes and dress until she finally said: Is your dress black, or blue…I can’t tell. I think that she was trying to give me a subtle style update

I totally didn’t chime in on the origina question because I figured anything I told you would go against the grain of conventional fashion wisdom. I wear brown and black together all the time…because I like the way it looks. I typically do not pay attention to fashion trends because they are just that – trends. {I also wear white after Labor Day – gasp! I know}

: ( I hate to think anyone’s comments made you feel bad about your taste. I’d guess that the initial aversion to brown+black is simply that people may be imagining that you’d pair brown shoes with a mostly-black outfit, or maybe a solid, bright-colored top and black shorts and then brown shoes would seem somewhat random…? And maybe they know that if there’s black in the outfit, and not brown, there’s usually another shoe that will ‘go’ better than brown? Like your casual heels (which i think TOTALLY work with a dressier, non-athletic-looking short and an equally non-sporty top) or those black and silver sandals, which sound really cute. Or slap on the brown ones with confidence and nobody will think twice about it. I’m sure you’ll find women wearing all three varieties.

But let’s be honest. People aren’t really going to pay a lick of attention to your footwear when you’re out with your gorgeous, well-behaved, sweet-cheeks babies, are they?

that by levity I just mean the kind of levity that fashion provides. I love the humor in your posts!! I have told the “poolside Korean War story” to so many of my friends. LOL for sure!!!!!

Well I’m certainly not the person to ask as I dress like the hippie chick that I am. I do work in an office, though, and see what other people wear. Some folks are really stylish and others (like me…) get by with what they can get by with. I am perfectly happy in a flowy skirt and my Birkenstocks.

Me, personally, I never got the shorts/heels thing. I mean seriously, “dressy” shorts? What’s up with that, but oh well. I would rather see a cute skirt (or skort, if you have to) go with those heels. I dunno, shorts are shorts and just don’t say “dressy” to me.

What are you trying to dress up for? BTW

As for non-matching colors, I’m all about that and I think ALL colors match (see above: hippie chick). I have a friend who calls me a peacock, and yup that’s me…except when I’m wearing all black, and nopers I’m not some kid I’m 43 LOL! But I *was* quite the punk rock girl for a while back in the late 70′s/early 80′s. Wow.

Hey Mary, I say wear what ya want. If it works for you, then MAKE it work for everyone else

You should post a picture of you in the shorts and shoes so we’ll get a better idea of what you mean. I personally think it would look fine.

I’ve heard others say that black and brown is okay together these days, but I don’t care to mix them myself. I like to wear black shoes if I’m wearing black clothes, and brown shoes with brown clothes, etc.

I’m not into fashion at all, either, but I’m a bit picky about my shoes matching just the way I like.
