Sanity begins to return

August 7, 2008

Thanks so much for all your prayers and good wishes. We got our daughter’s meds changed today, to something that should be just as effective with the seizures but also has a mood stablilizing effect. 24 hours off the Keppra she is already returning to her more familiar happier self, so I am hopeful.

Why, I wonder, did we not get that mood-stablilizing version in the first place??? Honestly…I’m really aggravated that the med caused so much trouble. This afternoon when the mail-order drug people told me that we could NOT return the unopened bad med and would be charged $40 for it, I lost it a little. I was so galled to think of paying $40 MORE for the medicine that had so not helped that I could hardly stand it. After getting nowhere with the first person, I asked for the supervisor and told him the whole story of our past two days (with a sob or two for effect– maybe I need mood-stabilizers too!) and bless the man, he decided that just this once, he’d bend the rule and accept the return.

Hooray. Now, hopefully this new med will keep the seizures at bay AND allow our daughter to begin to feel more even-keeled. Thanks, again to everyone for the good wishes. I so much appreciate hearing from each of you.

I’m so pleased the change in meds has worked. It’s a scary business and it never ceases to amaze me how quickly drugs are prescribed without much thought to the after effects.
I was thinking maybe I should have gone on quite a strong drug to help my brain recover from the accident I had, but after hearing your stories this week I’m sort of glad I didn’t… and I don’t have a lovely mother like you to take care of me like your lucky daughter does. Hope the new medication works a lot better.

Mary, SO glad to hear that you’ve gotten the meds switched and already seeing improvement. I hope this new one, w/ the mood affect helps too…that’s a nice side benefit of some of these seizure meds. But it’s still trial and error, that’s why they call it the medicine jungle…or I do! But again, I am betting this one will be MUCH better than the last. Isn’t it surprising HOW much the meds can affect personality? Whew! Hang in there, this will stabilize and find a happy “normal” level, it will! Keeping you all in my prayers, M

God is good all the time! I hope the med change will work. Just look how God had his hand in talk with the supervisor when you wanted to return the unopened, unused meds. All the time God is good!

I’m so glad to hear that! I’m all about mood stabilizers ever since I hit on the right combination for myself. It’s amazing the difference they make.

Very glad to hear that things are settling down. For anyone reading that is a face-to-face friend, I just published a post on “how to help a family that is in a medical crisis” ~ maybe you will get some ideas on how to bless Owlhaven and her flock.
