Why I am (usually) not a high-maintainance girl

May 10, 2007

Today was a very unusual day at the Owlhaven. I had a real honest-to-goodness hair appointment. If I am remembering correctly, the last time I had my hair cut by a professional was when I was a teenager. And not only did I get a haircut today, I also got highlights.

Mostly I’ve avoided subsidizing the beauty salons of America thru sheer tight-waddery. I don’t wanna spend money on something I have to redo again in 3 months. But after today’s experience, I have a whole new reason for avoiding hair salons in the future.

This cut and color of mine took FOUR (4!) hours of my life. During which time I read ROCK STAR magazine (did you know that someone married the very scary Marilyn Mansen?) and Architectural Digest. (Did you know that if you so desire, you can spend $49,000 on a MATTRESS?? S’truth.) Multiple times during the morning, I wondered why on earth I’d felt ‘proper’ highlights were important enough to spend half my day doing.

How’d the hair turn out? Well, feeling alternately bold and terrified, I requested a razor-cut and bleached blonde highlights. Then the whole 4 hours it was being done, I fretted that it was going to be: too bold. Too light. Too dark. Too short. Too choppy. You name it, I worried about it. And believe me, I had plenty of time TO worry.

Thankfully the beautician ‘read’ me right, and did not go too extreme. She cut 4 inches off my hair, toned the yellow out of it, gave me some nice little bleached-blonde streaks. Revolutionary I am not, but my hair feels light and summery and sassy and fun. Yet still me. Not sure it’d be worth four hours in the chair every 3 months, but I am enjoying it very much right now!

Oh it looks absolutely gorgeous! Four hours??? I’d be a bit stressed out if it took 4 hours too. But it looks like it was worth every minute of it.

Very cute! So what’s the occasion? I hope you at least get to go on a hot date! :)

I get my naturally curly hair cut no more than 6 times a year. Doesn’t cost much ($10 now that my old beautician retired). So I can’t complain much.

    I love it!!

It shouldn’t have taken 4 hours though. Mine is done in about 2.

So, was there a special reason for the sudden change of heart about subsidizing the local hair salon?

Your new do looks fabulous! I love it! I totally understand the every 3 months thing. I have never dyed or highlighted my hair. I know I will probably do it eventually, but don’t want to be a slave to the roots!

You look terrific. What a cute cut.

Your hair looks great! It should not have taken 4 hours though!!!! I got highlights just for fun last montha and I think I was there about an hour and a half, including the cut. And she did a great job. =)

I agree, though, it does seem like a lot of money to spend for something that doesn’t last very long. =)

She not only married him but she’s divorced him now, too. She’s Dita Von Teese, right? Completely gorgeous.

Lovely hair! The colour is very summery :)

Love it! But how is hubby dealing with the loss of his redhead?

And…I have to say 4 hours at the salon sounds kind of nice to me…Take a book next time.

You look beautiful! The color is great and so’s the length! I’ve been considering a hair color change for a while now. Nothing drastic…I’m thinking auburn highlights.

I realized the whole hair-color thing was a scam when I overheard a beautician tell someone that the key to good business is to get your clients “chemically dependent”!!!

    But it looks great!

Well, despite the wasted time, I’d say it’s a success. You look like a babe! :)

Your hair is fabulous. I have highlighted mine for years but I go more like 5 months in between, the closer it is to your color, the longer you can go.

I am “chemically dependant” as when life is stressful, I go get my hair done and usually feel better. Kind of like how I feel my van drives better when it is clean!

I bring in my own mags and books and make it my “me time”

    Enjoy your hair do!!

I did the same thing for the first time a couple of months ago. I wouldn’t change it for a second! I LOVE it, it’s so refreshing and no matter how crappy of a hair day I’m having, the highlights totally mask it! Looks great!

Not entirely sure WHY I decided to go to a salon now. I think it was a combination of my 40th birthday coming next month, and not wanting to look like a frump for these older daughters we are adopting…..

What a sweet cut! It suits you perfectly. It’s nice to be pampered once in a while :)

next time bring a book though – think how much good reading you could get done in 4 hours!

    Lela says:

I know what you mean about wasting time. I get my hair cut every 6 weeks and I don’t look forward to it. I can’t afford 4 hours; that is why my highlights are gray. But, your hair looks good and you look bright and summery.

totally cute, mary! It was the day for sister haircuts! you, AM, and I all got haircuts yesterday :) I’m sorry that it took so long and that you had to miss out on lunch with us. it was good fun. at least you got a great deal on a great haircut, though!!

It is lovely Mary! You look really super, and it will be cooler too. Mine was lopped off mightily (without my permission) a month ago, and I am starting to get used to it. Hair salons are a nightmare for me!

I love it. It looks really great. Maybe this time took longer because the highlights were totally new. I only get full highlights three times a year with partials four of five times…at a much lower cost and time savings, too.

I think it looks great. And frankly, I would think you’d enjoy the chance to spend 4 hours of time just being fussed over instead of being fussed at! :) I know I would. Sounds like a fun day to me. Enjoy your summery look.

Your hair looks great! I understand about not wanting to spend 4 hours in the chair every few months though. I’d be thinking of the other things I could be doing with my time during the whole appointment! But, the results here show that it was definitely worth it.

I think it looks great. I did my hair last year. Colored it red (like it really did used to be), got it styled and got highlights. I felt so great. My wallet sure took a hit though. I couldn’t afford to keep up with it, at that salon at least! Four hours would have sent me into a panic attack though, I can’t stand to be cooped up in one place for that long, unless it’s home. Happy birthday next month.

Mary, you know I don’t appreciate it when someone looks cuter than me.

Your hair ROCKS! I love it! Great picture too.
