Worked for me
Playing Shannon at Rocks In My Dryer‘s game again. Since we just got back from 10 days of camping with 8 kids, I thought I’d share a few ideas that make camping easier for us.
–Disposable dishes, tons of ’em. When Costco has them, I stock up on those styrofoam ‘clamshells’ that fit a hamburger. I use them instead of plates or bowls at many meals. At meals where I serve several items, like spaghetti and salad, I spread them open and put one food in each compartment. Kids love it that their food doesn’t touch! At meals featuring just one item, like chili or instant oatmeal, I cut the ‘clamshells’ in half at the hinge which gives me two separate bowls.
–Hooks, hooks, hooks all around on the walls of the trailer. We have enough in the bathroom for everyone’s towels, and enough in the main living area of the trailer for everyone’s jackets. This frees up closet space for duffel bags and sleeping bags. Hanging jackets up on hooks takes a fraction of the time, and the jackets don’t constantly fall off hooks like they do hangers, with people constantly dragging things in and out of the closet.
Works for me!

Love the clamshell idea. My son hates his food to touch. Good for on the go!
Ah, excellent. Hope your trip went well!
We just got back from camping too, a short trip this time. We’re going again for a week the last week of August, just before the kids go back to school.
I don’t think we have those “clam shells” up here I have never seen them very interesting and I agree with you totally about the hooks! I also love; plastic storage compartments in our RV, the fit everywhere from the drawers to organize them to the cupboards to keep things separate and sticky foamy placemats to keep things from rolling around all over the place.
I always like your tips! Thanks so much!
So brilliant. I’ve never realized you could buy the clamshells. I’m going traveling soon, and those are going with me!
I’m all about not having to do dishes, especially when out in the wild blue yonder.
I would have never thought of using clamshells like this! My son is in this period where food! cannot! touch! — so this will likely be used at home, as well. Anything that puts less dishes in the sink, right? ;o)
The clamshells are billiant. We travelled earlier this summer in our motor home with eight people. I am always all about disposable dishes, but your solution is truly multi-purpose!
I like the idea of the hooks, as we never seem to have enough places to hang towels, and hooks are exactly what we use at home. I have a favor to ask though. Would you mind posting or sending me a couple pics of just where you mounted enough hooks in the tiny bathroom/living area of a trailer for all those towels and jackets? I would love to try this, but I just can’t got a picture in my head of how to make it work. Thanks!
Great Idea, I will keep in mind for when my boys get older and we go camping.
I have also found those styrofoam clamshells at party stores – where you can get catering supplies as well…
I am so envious – a trip to the coast! Sounds like heaven.
I love COSTCO for supplies. I had no clue what you were talking about when you said “Clam Shell Boxes” so I asked my hubby….he told me “to-go-boxes.” Aaah! Great idea! I will look at Costco for those. They would be great to help keep the food warm if the kids aren’t back at the campsite from playing. Then you could just cut the one side off after the kids return to the campsite (so you could use the other side for a different meal).
